The Medicare Levy Surcharge (MLS) is a a strategy by the Australian Government to encourage people to take out private hospital cover and reduce the burden on the public medicare system.

To put it simply, if you earn over a certain amount and don't have private health insurance with hospital cover, you will pay an additional amount of tax to cover the MLS.
